Young team looking to uphold program legacy

The volleyball team has years of winning and high-level playing in its makeup. This young crew is looking to continue that legacy in the 2021 season.

The Cyclones are back to full force this season after an odd spring schedule that only included six matches, far short of their typical 30-plus game fall calendar. Coming off such an unconventional season provided the team with a different set of obstacles, but Head Coach Lauren Lorenz is confident her squad will have a successful year.

Seven players are new faces while the four returners are leading the way. Sophomores Nicole Ramirez (Lincoln-Way Central), Takiyah Clark (Rich Central), Lily Saenz (Reavis) and Kylee Schwarz (Tinley Park) are stepping up, and setting the tone and a great example of what is expected in this program.

All-Region and All-Conference setter Ramirez is back with her depth of experience and knowledge. Her ability to run a quick and strategic offense will be a key element of the team. Clark, an All-Conference middle hitter, returned and has brought her game to a new level; she brings power to the Cyclone offense while her block will play a huge defensive role.

Incoming freshmen Jaelyn Donald (Thornton Fractional South) and Abby Sarich (Mother McAuley) are set to make an impact on the court right away. Donald is an outside hitter, who duals as an offensive and defensive threat. Sarich is a dynamic, versatile middle hitter who will be a force on the court.

"I am looking forward to seeing this team compete. It's difficult to know what to expect with a freshmen-heavy roster, but I am confident that these athletes have the experience and skill to compete with the top teams in the Skyway Conference and Region IV," said Lorenz, entering her sixth season heading the program.

The Cyclones officially open their season at the McHenry County College Invitational, Aug. 20 to 21.
