Cyclones earn honors in unusual season

The Cyclone volleyball team plays to win every year and does so successfully. This time around, they were happy just to play and see some teammates benefit with honors.

Everything was eccentric about this season: it took place in the spring instead of fall; they played six matches instead of 30-plus; they had less time to prepare; and they had extra precautions in place, as well as no spectators due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, that didn't stop the Cyclones from getting better every outing and earning some recognition.

"While this season was unconventional to say the least, the team showed great growth and improvement. Starting the season with a loss caught everyone off guard, but we used that as motivation to move forward, reset and set new goals for ourselves," said Head Coach Lauren Lorenz, finishing her fourth season leading the program.

Over the last few years, the Cyclones have been dominant, winning region and conference championships and competing at nationals. With all the changes from the pandemic, they were unable to practice as much or find their groove. They finished 3-3 overall and 2-2 in the Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference, even playing an alumnae match, but several players stepped up.

Sophomores and outside hitters Brianna Knezz (Lincoln-Way West) and Marriel McCaskill (Homewood-Flossmoor) led the way for the Cyclones this season. Knezz carried the team through several difficult, multiple-set matches. She was ranked No. 3 in the NJCAA Division II for kills per set (4.71) and fifth for points per set (5.2), and also was named to the All-Conference first team, All-Region team and nominated as an All-American. McCaskill also brought strong leadership qualities that helped the Cyclones while building her physical and mental game. She was named to the All-Conference second team and All-Region team.

Freshman Nicole Ramirez (Lincoln-Way Central) made a name for herself as a setter and earned All-Conference first team and All-Region honors. Freshman middle hitter Takiyah Clark (Rich Central) was credited for her blocking skills and named to the All-Conference second team.

"The team persevered through many close matches and truly showed their determination and grit throughout the season," Lorenz said. "Although we had to cut the season short and only played six matches, we're all very grateful to have had the opportunity to play at all."
