Women’s tennis ready to roll

The racquets are strung, the lineup is set, and the Cyclone women's tennis team is ready to hit the courts this fall.

In their shortened season last fall, the Cyclones played six regularly scheduled matches plus the NJCAA Region IV tournament. Now with a new coach, they're looking to see how far they can go in a closer to normal schedule.

Head Coach Matt Marusarz joined the staff earlier this summer. He is a former Cyclone, having only transferred from Moraine Valley after the spring 2020 canceled season. He also helps coach the boys tennis team at Oak Lawn High School and is finishing his own bachelor's degree. Still being in school and juggling various responsibilities helps him relate more to his players.

"I know what they're going through and can relate. I will do my best so they can play their best," Marusarz said. "I told them if they put in the effort, I'll give it right back. I'm very grateful for the opportunity to coach here."

The crew has worked hard in the preseason and is already looking consistent. They have a number of returners, including Amanda Hess (Lincoln-Way West), Nada Hinnawi (Richards), Trisha Meyers (Stagg) and Olivia Preston (Sandburg), as well as newcomers Victoria Maratea (Lincoln-Way West) and Hannah Markiewicz (Mother McAuley), who is expected to play #1 singles.

Every year the goal is to qualify for nationals, but Marusarz truly wants to see his players improve every match and be prepared for the season.

"I've told them my expectations and want them to play hard in every match," he said. "We've worked in the preseason, and I know the lineup will be solid."

The Cyclones' season and home opener are on Sept. 4, 11 a.m., against Sauk Valley Community College.
