Cyclones edge out Stormers

The Cyclone women's tennis team played smarter, including one of the best overall doubles matches this season, to grab a 5-4 victory over Milwaukee Area Technical College.

All nine positions played solidly. Brooke Zielke at No. 1 singles (6-0, 6-0), Julie Andrist at No. 2 (6-0, 6-1) and Trisha Meyers at No. 3 (6-2, 6-2) all had singles victories. No. 1 doubles Zielke/Libby Newton won 6-0, 6-0 as did the No. 2 duo Meyers/Andrist (6-2, 6-3). Serene Itani at No. 4 (1-6, 2-6), Libby Newton at No. 5 (4-6, 3-6) and Milca Barrera at No. 6 (3-6, 1-6) fell in singles. At No. 3 doubles, Itani/Barrera fell in a tough three set match (6-3, 4-6, 5-10).

This was not an easy matchup, but the Cyclones prevailed.

"Our players were able to step up their game by playing smarter instead of harder. They were hitting targets and not rushing into points. That goes for all six in the lineup. All of them put up a good, hard fight. Even though some lost in singles and were emotional about the loss, rightfully so, they took a moment to collect themselves and bring it full force during doubles," said Head Coach Breanna Vollan. "From all positions, a lot of character was shown, and I am very proud of them. All three doubles pairs played the best they have so far this season. A lot of things clicked in terms of communication."
