The Cyclones opened their season at the Saints Twilight Invite at Channahon Community Park. Although they didn't have enough runners to score as a full team, they ran well in their first, and only, 5K of the year.
"After a few months of training, the guys were ready to finally race, and there was a lot of excitement going into this meet," said Head Coach Dimitri Dimizas. "We knew we weren't going to score as a team, but everyone had their own goals to reach. The 5K will be the shortest race they have all season, so it was a nice introduction to collegiate running for the new guys. I was pleased with the efforts and results."
The lone sophomore, Jack Kajmowicz, led the crew, and the conference, in 17:23.5 for 48th place. Coming in behind him were Andrew Sima (17:28.5, 53rd), Joel Vargas-Cortes (18:17.5, 66th) and Robert Slezak (22:08.3, 96th).
It was a warm night for the runners, but the Cyclones were able to see a couple of Skyway Conference colleges for a peek at what to expect these next few months. Otherwise, the field was comprised of four-year colleges and universities, and they held their own.
