Cyclones take third on rolling course

On a course full of rolling hills, the Cyclones ran into third place at the Ranger Open at University of Wisconsin (UW)-Parkside, Wayne E. Dannehl Cross Country Course in Kenosha.

Moraine Valley was only one of three community colleges that competed in this event but finished the highest behind UW-Parkside and Carthage College. David Olmos and Brandon Armendarez interrupted the top-10 sweep by UW-Parkside by finishing in seventh (26:58) and 10th (27:44), respectively, out of 68 runners.

"David had a gutsy race. Knowing the course is more challenging than what he's seen this season, he wanted to get a feel for a fast, honest pace early on," said Head Coach Dimitri Dimizas. "Brandon went out controlled, moved up the entire race and finished with a nice negative split."

Jack Kajmowicz and Gavin Hampton worked together the whole race and relied on one another at different points for a 25th (29:29) and 29th place (29:42) finish, respectively. Ryan O'Connor was close behind in 35th place (30:19), which is something he's been practicing, Dimizas explained. Thomas Diaz is gradually getting back into shape, demonstrated by this race where he was nearly two minutes faster than his last one, finishing in 47th place in 32:14.

"We have one more race before the postseason, and that will be one more opportunity for them to run fast and work together," Dimizas said.
