Third place for team and David Olmos in season opener

A third place finish for the Cyclones' season opener and third place individual finish for David Olmos at the Earlybird Invitational at Eldridge Park in Elmhurst really set the tone for what's to come.

As the only community college in the field of nine teams, the Cyclones stepped up right from the start. In his first race as a Cyclone, Olmos finished 1.2 seconds (19:39.6) behind the second place runner from North Central College. He took third out of 118 runners and broke the Moraine Valley record for fastest 6K, which was 20:24.

Coming in after him were Brandon Armendarez (24th place, 20:37), Jack Kajmowicz (48th place, 21:58), Gavin Hampton (49th place, 21:59), Ryan O'Connor (75th place, 22:48) and Efrain Alvarez (89th place, 23:57).

"I was very pleased with the men. We've been coming to this meet since 2010, and this was one of the best season openers we've had. David had an incredible race and never backed down. Brandon and Gavin ran much faster than they did this time last year, which shows the work they've put in. Ryan missed out on this race last year but is in better shape and will continue to be counted on. Jack and Efrain had their collegiate debuts, and I'm proud of both of them. Jack is still rounding into shape after coming back from a long injury, so there's still lots to work with," said Head Coach Dimitri Dimizas. "They'll all need to build upon this race next meet as they move up to the 8K distance, which takes some getting used to. We're not at full strength yet, but we're getting there. I'm excited to see what they can do."
