Final second heroics send Cyclones to semis

Just when you thought the Cyclones' season was over, they found a way stay alive in the NJCAA Region 4 quarterfinals.

The #1 seed Moraine Valley (10-1-2) faced #9 Madison College (10-4-2) at home in their second matchup of the season. The WolfPack had gotten into the quarterfinals in a similar last-second win over #8 seed Oakton College.

Both teams battled from the start, each making near misses at the net, including a penalty kick from the Cyclones. The WolfPack finally capitalized on an opening with 12 minutes to go in the second half to get ahead 1-0. Moraine Valley was running low on chances with time running out but continued to push. In one final attempt, Fernando Alvarez launched the ball over all the players for Michal Gacek, who only played the last nine minutes of the game, to slide it in the right corner to tie the score with two seconds left on the clock.

With the game tied 1-1 at the end of regulation time, playoffs rules state the next goal would win the game through two 10-minute overtimes, if needed. The Cyclones only needed 30 seconds into the first overtime when Alvarez saw an opening in the left side of the net past a diving keeper to give his team a golden goal.

"We were a little rusty after 10 days without a game, but only a big team could pull off what we did. That's big time stuff. Anyone who coaches knows these games are not always pretty, and the opponent can have something to do with it. We found a way today," said Head Coach Chris Koloffon.

The Cyclones face #4 seed Elgin Community College in the Region 4 semifinals on Wednesday, Nov. 6, 2:30 p.m., at home.
