Aiming for more in 2019

The last few years, the Cyclones have boasted nearly perfect records and co-conference championships. This season, they want an outright title and to go deep in the playoffs.

The 2018 team didn't lose their first game until Oct. 9, suffering just two losses overall and splitting the Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference championship. They've cultivated talented squads in recent years thanks to assistant Coach Chris Koloffon, and this year's group is just as good, if not better, said head Coach TJ Donahue, who enters his fourth year leading the program.

"We're talented again, and it reminds me of the last few years," Donahue said. "I want to continue to do what we've done, and we can. We just need to stay healthy. I'm hoping for more luck this season."

A large group from last year's team earned academic or athletic scholarships to move on to four-year colleges and universities leaving the Cyclones with a handful of returners. Some key sophomores back this season include Vasili Vouris (Sandburg) and Shun Tanaka (Japan) on defense, and Fernando Alvarez (Reavis) and Omar Barragan (Reavis) on offense.

A few skilled players who should be difference makers include freshmen Fernando Barragan (Reavis), Mickey Flores (Romeoville), Andruw Martinez (Morton West) and Jonathan Vasquez (Solorio Academy).

Joining Donahue and Koloffon on the sidelines for the first time will be assistant Coach Michael McLaughlin and student manager Brian Fanella.

Right off the bat, the Cyclones have to face tough teams—Morton College and Monroe Community College. As long as they stay healthy and focused, they should be on track to repeat their successes and go further in the playoffs.
