Runners up, and medals for Bennett and Douglas

A few key players helped the Cyclones seal a second place overall finish in the Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference along with some honors at the Cyclones' home course at Cog Hill on Sept. 25.

In this final Skyway outing, the Cyclones needed to take second place in order to finish second overall. They edged out Oakton Community College by two strokes. College of Lake County locked down first place last week. Throughout the short season, the Cyclones and Owls battled through every outing with only four strokes separating the two teams in the last three matches.

"The guys were nervous and put a lot of pressure on themselves because they knew they had to beat Oakton. We played well enough to squeak it out," said Head Coach Matt Lovelace.

Not only did the Cyclones finish runners up, but several players made their mark. Paul Douglas (79) was eighth overall in conference and Marty Bennett (84) was 10th for which they received medals. Douglas averaged 81 and Bennett had an 84 throughout conference meets. Michael Rollberg earned an 86, better than his season average, to help the team. Akim Bizati (87) and Patrick Clifton (95) rounded out the scoring.

"Both players who earned honors can be very proud of their achievements. Mike was key today. Without his great round, we would not have finished where we did. Second place in conference and two out of five guys winning conference medals? There's not a lot more you can ask for. I already consider the season a success," Lovelace said. "It was such a relief to finish where we did. Now the focus can shift fully to regionals. We're looking to improve on what we did today with a good finish there."
