Ups and downs of basketball season end in semis

The Cyclone men's basketball season had plenty of ups and downs, capping with an over .500 record and athlete honors.

This team had flash and plenty of talent to earn them a 22-10 overall and 7-5 Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference record. They also had a few games they should have won and finished the year in the region semifinals with a loss to a tough Milwaukee Area Technical College squad.

"We had over 20 wins, which was good. We had a very talented team and had a good season. We just didn't finish it like we thought we would," said Head Coach Anthony Amarino. "I feel bad for the sophomores ending the season with that last loss, but we had a good group of guys."

A majority of the starting lineup included sophomores who played well. Cortez King (Homewood-Flossmoor) was named a first team All-Region and second team All-Conference player. Michael Drynan (Evergreen Park) finished as the No. 3 blocker in NJCAA Division II with 84 blocks and was No. 24 for field goal percentage (61.7). He was an All-Conference honorable mention. Nicholas Holmes (Homewood-Flossmoor) ranked 20th for steals (67) and 24th for assists (147). Thanks in part to those two, the Cyclones collectively were ranked No. 6 for blocks per game (6), No. 18 for steals per game (10.2) and No. 21 for field goals made per game (32.4).

Although the Cyclones will lose about half of the team next season, a few freshmen should return, including Jalen Hughes (Hillcrest), who earned an All-Conference honorable mention.
