Offense turns up for the sweep

The Cyclones stopped their brief skid with a sweep of Rock Valley College, which included a shutout and a high-scoring matchup.

It took three pitchers and a few big hits for Moraine Valley to shut out the Golden Eagles 9-0. The Cyclones tacked on three runs in the second inning ignited by a Rock Valley error. Another five-run third inning thanks to drives from Anthony Cappelletti, Maximus Bullock and Christopher Villafuerte, plus one more run in the seventh helped seal the victory. Jake Peterka led the offense, going 2-for-3 with an RBI and three runs. He also stole four bags this game. Collectively, the Cyclones stole 14 bases. Stephen Insley had three while Patrick Hayes, Alex Martinez, Villafuerte and Bullock each had two.

On the bump, Jonathan Runquist earned the victory. He surrendered zero runs on two hits over three innings, striking out one and walking one. Luke Bentley and Ryan Grand entered the game out of the bullpen in relief.

It was the battle of the offenses in the second game when the Cyclones didn't take back the lead until their last at-bat for the 11-8 victory.

In the first inning, Moraine Valley scored first off of Insley, who doubled on a 0-1 count. However, Rock Valley had a few solid innings – first, fifth and sixth, where they scored all their runs. Going into the seventh, the Cyclones were down 8-3 before Insley started the rally, doubling in three. They tallied eight runs that inning for the win. Moraine Valley totaled 13 hits this game. Martinez (3-for-4, 2B, RBI), Peterka (2-for-4, 2B), Villafuerte (2-for-4, RBI) and Insley (2-for-4, two 2B, 4 RBIs) led the way.

Gavin Quinlan started the game for Moraine Valley. The lefthander went one inning, allowing two runs on one hit and striking out two. Nick Easton was the winning pitcher for the Cyclones. He went one inning, allowing one hit and two runs while walking zero. Byron Scholp and Daniel Rosado helped in relief.
