The walk-off curse

The walk-off curse

The Cyclones are starting to believe in the walk-off curse. After two close games where they tied going into the final inning, walk-off hits were their undoing in a sweep by College of Lake County.

It was a pitcher's duel until the bottom of the third when the Lancers scored three runs. The Cyclones put one on the board in the top of the sixth after Christopher Villafuerte grounded out to bring home a run. However, the Lancers answered in the bottom half on a sac fly. The top of the seventh saw a surge at the plate as the Cyclones scored three to tie the game at four. But with one final at-bat, the Lancers knocked in the go-ahead run to dole a 5-4 loss to the Cyclones.

Villafuerte, Tyler Sinclair, Patrick Hayes, Stephen Insley (2B, RBI), Scott Richards and Anthony Cappelletti each collected one hit in this game. Brendan Gill started the game for Moraine Valley. He surrendered four runs on six hits over six innings while striking out four. Jace McWilliams took the loss after throwing one-third of an inning, allowing one hit and one run while walking zero.

The second game looked awfully similar to the first with the same end result. The Cyclones started the scoring in the first inning when Anthony Cappelletti (2-for-3, 2 RBIs) tripled on a 1-1 count. They tacked on two more in the third before the Lancers scored one and then three in the fifth on some well-placed hits. In the top of the seventh, the Cyclones tied the game at four but, once again, when the Lancers had a final at-bat, the earned the go-ahead run to win 5-4.

Brett Renken took this loss after pitching six innings, allowing seven hits and five runs while striking out eight and walking one. Of the Cyclones' six hits, Jake Peterka and Cappelletti each racked up multiple.
