Renken throws shutout in Spartan sweep

Renken throws shutout in Spartan sweep

It's been a long time coming, but the Cyclones were finally able to play a doubleheader on their new home field and did so with some flair by sweeping Elgin Community College.

It started with a pitcher's duel, but Brett Renken came out on top throwing a complete game shutout in the first game to christen the field. Renken was able to hold off the Spartans, even grabbing a double play ball in the fifth inning, which was necessary as his offense only mustered one run in the first. Alex Martinez got on after being hit by a pitch before Andrew Tenison (2-for-3) singled him to third. Maximus Bullock scored the lone run after hitting a sacrifice fly to score Martinez. That was all the Cyclones needed with Renken on the mound. He struck out five and walked one in the 1-0 victory.

The Cyclones found their bats in game two, earning a 7-2 win. The Spartans got on the board with a two-run single in the first inning, but the Cyclone pitching shut them down after that. Tenison (3-for-3) scored a run for the Cyclones in the first inning, which stood until the fourth inning when the team added four more. Tenison and Martinez each had an RBI double plus a few Spartan errors allowed the other runs that inning. They tacked on two more runs in the sixth to seal the victory. Byron Scholp earned the win after entering the game in the start of the third. The righthander surrendered zero runs on zero hits over five innings, striking out six.
