Big hits in split with Panthers

Drama ran high, as the Cyclones faced off against rival Morton College. Between a walk-off and an attempted comeback, the Cyclones split two with the Panthers: a 6-5 victory and 9-7 loss.

In the first game, it was the Panthers who started off the scoring in the second inning on a ground out RBI. The Cyclones notched a run in the third and fourth, but the Panthers fought back to lead 3-2 going into the bottom of the fifth. That's when Maximus Bullock (3-for-4) went yard to put his team ahead. The game was tied at five in the bottom the seventh when a Panther error scored the go-ahead winning run for the Cyclones.

Bullock led the offense while Tyler Sinclair and Scott Richards also each added an RBI in the victory. Byron Scholp was the winning pitcher, surrendering one run on one hit over one inning. Jonathan Runquist threw two innings in relief out of the bullpen. Brendan Gill started the game. He gave up three runs on two hits over four innings, striking out two.

The Cyclones fell behind early in the second game. Morton scored on a two-run homerun in the first inning and a fielder's choice in the second inning before the Cyclones added a run off a homerun from John Gonsalves (2-for-4). It was a big six-run fourth inning by the Panthers that hurt. Despite having an eight-run deficit, the Cyclones were still able to claw back. They scored on a groundout by Bullock in the fifth, and a hit from Anthony Cappelletti (1-for-4, 1 RBI), homerun by Andrew Tenison (1-for-3, 3 RBIs) and sacrifice fly by Stephen Insley (1 RBI) all in the sixth. But it wasn't enough, and offense from both teams was stunted in the seventh inning.

Brett Renken took the loss. The righthander lasted two innings, allowing four hits and three runs while striking out one.
