Cyclones amass 29 runs in doubleheader

After a day scoring 25 runs to defeat Prairie State College, the Cyclones added a few more runs – 29 – today to defeat the Pioneers for two more wins.

It wasn't a sure victory in the early innings. The game was knotted at one until the top of the fourth inning when Stephen Insley singled on a 2-2 count to score one run. Anthony Cappelletti homered on a 0-1 count, scoring three runs, while Christopher Villafuerte singled on the first pitch of the at-bat to score one. That kept the Pioneers at bay.

In their 13-hit barrage, Cappelletti drove in seven runs, going 2-for-2 at the plate with two sacrifice flies, a home run and single. Insley, Patrick Hayes and Scott Richards each managed two hits. Jonathan Runquist got the start. The righty surrendered two runs on three hits over five innings, striking out two in the Cyclones' 13-2 victory.

The Cyclones' second game saw even more offensive firepower, particularly in their nine-run second inning. Moraine Valley got on the board in the first inning on a Pioneers' error. The second inning saw RBIs from Tyler Sinclair, Thomas Carlson, Tellis Parnell, Maximus Bullock and Cappelletti. Of the team's 13 hits, Jake Peterka, Carlson, Cappelletti, Bullock and Sinclair each collected two in the 16-2 win.

Luke Bentley led things off on the bump, allowing one hit and no runs over two innings, striking out one and walking one. This second two-game victory gave the Cyclones a much-needed boost in their win column as their record improved to 5-6.
