Back to business in 2021

The Cyclones are going back to the basics to prepare for a unique season of baseball, but they're ready to go.

The team had their season cut short at spring break in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and they weren't allowed to have summer or fall practices together. In January, they finally were able to practice as a team. Physically and mentally, the Cyclones needed a refresh, so Head Coach Hugh Dennehy focused on conditioning and fundamentals.

"This is the most baseball athletic team I've had in my five years. It's a nice team," Dennehy said. "We're all excited to play."

In their last complete season (2019), the Cyclones advanced in regionals, which Dennehy wants to achieve again. Because of last year's cancellation, the NJCAA extended playing eligibility, so the Cyclones have some "super sophomores." With this additional depth, they have a goal to win north of .500, which is tough for the level of competition in the region. They also are working on their offensive game, breaking it down and being more strategic at the plate.

Adding to the excitement is a new baseball field. Although the Cyclones can't play on it until April when the grass is settled, it gives the team a level up they haven't had in a few years with a constantly flooding and often unplayable diamond.

"It's like a teacher without a classroom. It's hard to not work out there, but the guys and coaches are excited to get on a new field. It will help make us step up," Dennehy explained.

The Cyclones are expecting some good things from returning pitchers Brett Renken (Richards) and Brendan Gill (Mount Carmel) as well as pitcher and outfielder/infielder Christopher Villafuerte (Richards). There will be continued depth down the middle with Patrick Hayes (Brother Rice) and Stephen Insley (St. Rita). Returning pitcher Andrew Tenison (Sandburg) also looks to do some damage from the mound. Strong recruits include Maximus Bullock (Morgan Park) and Thomas Carlson (Peotone). Pitcher Byron Scholp (Morgan Park) has returned from injury and is already throwing 85+ mph. Newcomer John Gonsalves (Tinley Park) should be a starting first baseman and can DH.

"We're older and stronger. Physically, we'll be good. Mentally we're in a good place. I'm excited to see what we'll do," Dennehy said. "I'd be shocked if we didn't have a good year."
