Sophomore day sees big win

There's no better way to celebrate the team's sophomores than with a big win. The Cyclones defeated the visiting Elgin Community College Spartans 13-5.

In the early innings, both teams kept the scoring tight. Although the Cyclones led 3-0 by the second inning, the Spartans bounced back in the third with a three-run homerun. Once the Cyclones were back at the plate in the fourth inning, Gerald Powell (1-for-2, 3 runs, double) started the surge with a double and scored on a dribbler from Nate Villagomez (2-for-5, 2 RBIs). Kyel Alexander (1-for-3, RBI) hit a sac fly to get his team up 5-4. Another three-run fifth inning by the Cyclones helped them maintain the lead.

The Spartans attempted a comeback in the sixth, but a close play at home stopped any rally. Contributing bats to this victory included Stephen Insley (1-for-4, 3 RBIs, double), Brenden Butler (3-for-5, double, 2 RBIs), Gilbert Jaime-Baez (2-for-4, two doubles, 2 RBIs) and Thomas Moran (2-for-5, double, RBI). Ryan Czajowski earned the win, surrendering one run on six hits over four and two thirds innings. Richie Kiernicki threw two innings in relief.
