Offense stars in Cyclone sweep of Eagles

Between cancellations and postponed games due to weather, the Cyclones were able to squeeze in a sweep of Robert Morris University JV in a doubleheader (March 16) in an offensive barrage.

Four of the Cyclones' runs in the first 11-7 victory came from Brenden Butler (2-for-3, 4 RBIs), who had a big game. He doubled in the third, when his team first got on the board, and had a long ball in the sixth. The Cyclones scored five runs in the third thanks to Antulio Esparza (2-for-4, 3 RBIs, double), Nate Villagomez (2-for- 4, 1 RBI, double), Thomas Moran (1 RBI), Gerald Powell (1-for-3, 1 RBI) and Butler, which the Eagles countered in the following inning. However, Moraine Valley added two more three-run innings on runs from Moran, Esparza and Gilbert Jaime-Baez (3-for-4, RBI, 2 runs, stolen base).

Richie Kiernicki got the start for the Cyclones allowing four runs but striking out five to earn the win. Brett Smith went three innings on the mound striking out four, and Brendan Gill closed it out.

A full offensive effort in the second game gave the Cyclones the 10-8 win.

Jaime-Baez started the four-run first inning on a groundout. The first three innings saw contributions from Niles Gall as well as Moran and Powell, who each doubled and had an RBI. Kyel Alexander stole three bags on the day while Phil Hyland doubled in the insurance run in the bottom of the sixth.

Moran started on the hill with three strikeouts. Chris Martinez came in for two relief innings and four strikeouts. Tim Dobrik also came in and shut down the Eagles, allowing zero runs and striking out six.
