Cyclones looking to prove themselves in unique season

When the Cyclones are finally able to hit the floor, they aim to reclaim championships and continue their successes despite setbacks from COVID-19.

The Cyclones compete in their first match next month, a departure from their typical August start because of COVID-19 precautions implemented by the NJCAA. Still, they intend to capitalize on a 2019 season that included an Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference championship and a 2018 run at nationals and region championship.

Last season (2019), the Cyclones finished with an overall 26-9 record and were undefeated in conference. However, they suffered an unexpected loss in the region semifinals and are now looking for redemption.

Returning from that championship crew are All-Conference and All-Region player Brianna Knezz (Lincoln-Way West), Marriel McCaskill (Homewood-Flossmoor), Lily Saenz (Reavis) and Meghan Rohe (Shepard).

Joining them are a few freshman to add some strength. Nicole Ramirez, a setter from Lincoln-Way Central, will be influential. She comes from the Ultimate Volleyball Club and brings plenty of volleyball knowledge and experience. Takiyah Clark is a middle hitter from Rich Central, who also will be a key player, adding her athleticism, strong blocking and a competitive edge. Amelia Bresnahan is a defensive specialist/Libero from Tinley Park, who will add solid defense to the program. Julia Janks is another versatile player from Oak Lawn, who can assist in nearly any position. Also joining the crew is Jenna Ryan (Marist) and Kylee Schwarz (Tinley Park).

"This season, we are looking to really prove ourselves as a force after a tough end last year," said Head Coach Lauren Lorenz, who enters her fifth season with the team. "With the returners setting the tone for the freshmen, and the knowledge and athleticism of the incoming class, I think we should be successful in doing so."
