Short season yields promise for fall

Between the COVID-19 pandemic, an altered schedule, reduced roster and new coach, the Cyclones faced a few challenges, but they persevered with some individual honors and hope for a normal fall season.

Typically, the Cyclones compete in the fall, but their season changed to a six-game spread with two scrimmages and only two home games starting at the end of March. They started off with a fighting spirit, however, and several players pushed as much as they could with the little time they had to compete.

Allison Schaar (Schaumburg), sophomore leading scorer from last season, put in the work and led her team on the field. For her efforts, she earned a nod to the All-Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference first team. On defense, sophomore Abby Palumbo (Sandburg) put up a good wall against a stacked lineup of teams, helping her earn All-Conference second team honors. Sophomore Jenifer Latoza (Lockport) has been a leader on defense both seasons with the Cyclones and played four games this year until ending with an injury.

"They worked hard and had a good attitude. The team really depended on Allison this season. She's one of the top players around," said Head Coach Gerry Norris, finishing his first season leading the program.

With more time to recruit and build a base, Norris hopes a few returning players and more signees will add to a more robust team that can compete as they normally do in the fall.

"This was an experience to learn from. We'll look for enough players to practice and play in the fall, and hopefully they'll have a good attitude, want to learn and do the work to succeed," Norris said.
