Cyclones best Cobras in OT

The fighting spirit was back a few days after a devastating loss as the Cyclones took a 4-3 overtime victory from Parkland College.

Within the first four minutes of the game, the Cyclones gave up two goals and were down 2-0. However, they regrouped and responded. For the next 20 to 25 minutes, Moraine Valley was on the Cobras' tail. Allison Schaar got her team back in the game with a shot 25 yards out. Shortly after, with pressure from the forwards, Parkland played a pass back to their goalie. She mishandled the ball, which ended up in the back of the net to make it 2-2. Schaar scored again shortly thereafter to go up 3-2 heading into halftime.

The wind picked up in the second half, making it tougher to stop the ball. Parkland ended up getting a goal back off of a play to even the score. The Cyclones missed some chances, saw a couple of yellow cards and suffered some injuries, going down to just 11 players and no subs. After 90 minutes, the score remained deadlocked at three.

Going into a 10-minute overtime, the Cyclone captains won the coin toss and chose to defend the south goal, which had the wind at their backs. Pushing forward and using the wind to their advantage, the Cyclones executed in a crunch. Schaar assisted the game winner when she outpaced a player on the right side and crossed the ball toward the far post where Anna Kois headed it in.

"Parkland is always a tough one, especially when you have to travel two-plus hours for the game. Although I thought we had a great focused warmup, two mistakes led to two early goals. I'm very happy with how we responded and how fast we were able to respond. After things settled down, I thought there were stretches of some very good attacking soccer from our side," said Head Coach Al Palar. "I'm happy to get the win. We've made a habit of winning in overtime here at Parkland. It's the second time in three years we won in that fashion here. Now we have a big game to focus on Wednesday against Waubonsee."
