Offense shines in shutout

Three Cyclones scored their first goals of the season and freshman Allison Schaar continued her offensive tear in the region as Moraine Valley shut out South Suburban College 5-0 at home.

Going into the game, the Cyclones had the edge over the Bulldogs, a well-coached team with players who can cause trouble. However, the Cyclones dominated the field and capitalized on their chances.

Xochiquetzal Torres opened the scoring midway through the first half with a header on a cross from Schaar, who assisted all three goals in the first half. Azury Sanchez scored her first goal of the season a minute later on a solid finish from inside the box. Ixchel Salgado also scored her first of the season just before halftime with a strike.

The second half saw more dominating possession and chances on goal by Moraine Valley. Schaar got her goal on a pass from Torres. She now leads Region IV in points (23), assists (7), and is second in goals (8), scoring in four out of five games played. Gisselle Almazan was the final first-time scorer to give her team five. Although most of the action was on the opposite end of the field, keeper Jocelyn Estrada made several saves to keep a clean sheet. However, with 20 minutes to go, Estrada received an uncharacteristic red card, and sophomore Madi Davis stepped in to finish in goal.

"This was a great result for us and an overall great performance by the players today. I know the talent we have, but it's not always easy to keep your composure and play through the game the way they did today. Obviously, I am very upset about the decision to give our goalie a red card, but sometimes that's just the hand you're dealt. That's what we plan on doing with it, dealing with it and finding a way to work through it," said Head Coach Al Palar. "We have three games this week, all away, so we're up against it for sure. I'm excited to see how the group responds to this adversity going forward."
