Regular season ends with a win on Sophomore Night

A strong second quarter helped elevate the Cyclones ahead of conference rival Waubonsee Community College in their final regular season game. Moraine Valley won 71-67.

This game also was redemption for the Cyclones, who lost to the Chiefs when they last met last month. Moraine Valley jumped to an early lead thanks to Olivia Baxa, Amari Cole and Sarah Burton. However, the Chiefs made their own run to take the 17-14 advantage at the end of the first quarter. It wasn't until a three-pointer from Baxa and some pressure from the Cyclones, especially Deniza Fuentes, to help them stop the Chiefs' offense midway through the second quarter to retake the lead. After the first half, the Cyclones led 36-28 with Baxa and Burton each scoring 11 points.

Although the Chiefs were able to make up some ground in the second half, the Cyclones maintained a lead in part from Burton's drives to the basket and scoring from Robin Stevenson and Baxa.

Burton led the offense with 21 points. Stevenson scored 15 points while Baxa had 14, 12 of which were from three-pointers. Andrea Robertson collected 13 rebounds and added two blocks.

After the game, the team recognized the four sophomores and their contributions this season: Colleen Zarembski (from left), Robertson, Cole and Burton.
