First Skyway win of year

First Skyway win of year

In their first conference victory of the season, the Cyclones edged out McHenry County College at home 70-66.

This was a much-needed win for the Cyclones to get back on track, but it didn't come easy. It took roughly two minutes before either team scored, which came from a free throw by Kelsey Kelley. With a few more buckets and added pressure on the Scots, the Cyclones were able to hold a 17-14 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Although the Cyclones continued their lead early in the second quarter, they went on a dry spell and allowed the Scots to secure a few three-pointers to take the lead back. At halftime, the Cyclones were down 33-32. Offensive struggles continued in the third quarter for Moraine Valley despite a brief retaking of the lead, but the Scots continued their streak of three pointers to go up 50-46 at the end of the third quarter.

The driving force in the final 10 minutes was Katchie Savic. She scored 14 of the 24 points to seal the win. From free throws to field goals and three pointers, she hit all parts of the court. Cyclone pressure on the Scots, particularly in the final few minutes, also helped halt McHenry's offense.

Savic ended the night with 28 points, four assists and three steals. Kirsten Kamholz added 11 buckets while Mary Chronopoulou added 11 points and five rebounds. Kelley contributed 10 points, but Briana Sanchez led under the basket with eight rebounds.
