Surging third gives Cyclones semifinal victory

Surging third gives Cyclones semifinal victory

Another surging third quarter helped the Cyclones continue their impressive season as they took a dominating 100-61 victory over Illinois Valley Community College in the NJCAA Region IV semifinals.

Every game in the playoffs moves this team one step closer to the ultimate goal of competing for a national championship. But it's not getting any easier. Although the Cyclones jumped out to a fast 14-6 lead, a 14-0 run by the Eagles saw the Cyclones behind 20-14 with 2:43 to go in the first quarter. The Cyclones regrouped after a timeout but were still down 20-19 at the end of the quarter. Moraine Valley controlled the second quarter and built a 42-30 at the half, but it was the 39-16 explosion in the third quarter that put the game away.

Hennessey Handy was in charge this outing with 23 points, eight assists, six rebounds and three steals. Ashley Hunter added 20 points, five rebounds and three steals while Kate Ruzevich controlled the inside with 14 rebounds and banked 15 points.

The No. 1 seeded Cyclones face No. 2 seed McHenry County College on March 9, 2:30 p.m., at Waubonsee Community College to determine who competes at the national championship. Although Moraine Valley has won both meetings this season, the Scots are the only team that have given the Cyclones trouble this season.
