Big hits, big fielding helps sweep Chiefs

Big hits and key fielding contributed to the Cyclones' doubleheader sweep of Waubonsee Community College Chiefs. They're now 6-0 in the conference.

The Cyclones dominated all around in the first game. With Emily Gorski on the mound, she allowed only three runs and struck out four in the 11-3 victory, but also helped her own cause. She had an RBI single in the first inning along with Fran Beggs and Abbie Wantroba, but ended the game early in the sixth after stealing third and scoring on a wild throw by the Chiefs. Beggs was unstoppable at the plate, going 3-for-3 with two doubles, a single and 4 RBIs. Brianna Dvorak also shot a two-run homerun over the left field fence in the sixth inning.

The offense from both teams made the second game more intense right up to the final out. The Cyclones took a 1-0 lead in the first after Danielle Travis knocked one over the left field fence onto the roof of the storage unit. They grabbed two more runs in the second from an RBI triple from Kara Riordan and after Zoe Supanich scored Beggs on a ground out. But the Chiefs found their bats and a few well-placed singles that inning to take a 4-3 lead. The Cyclones had a big six-run fourth inning thanks to some walks and RBI singles from Gorski and Lexi Udaykee. However, the Chiefs tied it up in the bottom of the inning, 9-9. Going into the top of the seventh inning and tied at 10, the Cyclones only needed to score and hold the Chiefs for the sweep. Gorski was the difference maker again, scoring Dvorak on a single to go up 11-10. She then pitched the Chiefs into fly outs, one of which could have been costly for the Cyclones if not for right fielder Alexandria Palumbo grabbing the out. With two outs, the Chiefs hit a triple, but Gorski jammed the next batter into a ground out for the 11-10 win.
