Spring training starts with a couple wins

The Cyclones headed south to South Carolina for spring training March 9-13, and they came home with plenty of success. Their first double header today included a clobbering of Genesee Community College (NY) 12-1 and a 6-2 win over Lehigh Carbon Community College (PA).

The Cyclones opened the week with a dominant win over Genesee in five innings. Liz McCuan tossed a solid game, allowing just one run while scattering eight hits, walking none and striking out two. The offense took off as Marissa Faletti (2 RBIs), Madi Davis (2-for-4, double), Brianna Dvorak (RBI) and Abbie Wantroba (3 RBIs) each collected two hits. Donna Booe, Lex Leighton (RBI) and Darcee Nichols also had hits in the onslaught. Fran Beggs contributed 2 RBIs while Jessica Coyle added one. Not only were the Cyclones fierce at the plate but they also were aggressive on the bases, stealing six. Faletti and Davis each stole two and Leighton, Nichols and Wantroba added the others. On defense, the Cyclones righted the ship after struggling in their prior two games in the N4C Tournament, posting no errors. Davis had a good day behind the plate, picking off a runner at third.

Their 6-2 victory saw a complete game by pitcher Mariah Martinez, who dominated a strong NJCAA Division 1 Lehigh Carbon team. Martinez scattered 14 hits over seven innings while striking out five. She also contributed offensively, going 3-for-3 with an RBI single in the second inning. Leighton also had three hits, including a first inning single that saw her steal second and score while advancing to third after a Lehigh error. She added 2 RBIs on a triple in the second inning, scoring Wantroba and Angela Abrand (who was running for Martinez). After Lehigh pulled within two in the sixth inning, Booe ripped a two-out double to centerfield to score Leighton and Faletti, getting much needed separation from the good hitting Cougars. Leighton and Martinez ended the game with three hits each. Faletti, Booe, Davis and Wantroba each had two hits while Beggs contributed the other one in the team's 15-hit attack. In addition to Leighton's triple and Booe's double, Faletti doubled this game. The Cyclones stayed speedy and aggressive on bases, stealing six more with Leighton getting two and Wantroba, Abrand, Faletti and Davis each taking one. Zoe Supanich started behind the plate, putting in some solid work.
