Knocked out in semis

After several impressive comebacks this season, the top-seeded, 19th ranked Cyclones (25-6) ended their season in the NJCAA Region IV semifinals. Moraine Valley lost 83-69 to the Sandburg College Chargers (22-9).

This was a team the Cyclones had to worry about. The first time these two met in November, the Cyclones lost by 15. Since then, Moraine Valley has made big strides, including most impressively taking a narrow win from #3 ranked South Suburban College. They have battled back from deficits and proven their drive to win. But in this semi matchup, the Cyclones couldn't escape their own mistakes.

The Chargers' zone defense halted the Cyclone offense, stunting starters Dontia Johnson (15 point, seven rebounds) and Jalen Hughes (nine points, six assists), largely in the first half. Collectively, the normally up-tempo Cyclones went 25-79 from the floor. They were banged up from some recent games and just ran out of gas. Although the Cyclones were able to knock down 15 mores points in the second half, it wasn't enough to overcome the Chargers.

"This game was a combination of us making too many errors defensively against a really good, disciplined team, who capitalized off what seemed like every mistake we made. It was really tough to end our season this way," said first-year Head Coach John Chappetto. "End of season losses usually making the returners work harder in the offseason. Our guys who'll be back next year had that look in their eyes of improving to be better next year."

Christopher Harrison was the leading scorer with 23 points. Ryan Saunders was the only other Cyclone to score double digits (11 points). Zion Fortune led under the basket, grabbing 11 boards.
