Nearly 50 Cyclones earn Skyway conference academic awards; one earns Dick Durrant Award

The Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference (ISCC) recognized 29 students as 2022-23 All-Academic Athletes of the Year while 21 freshmen were named All-Conference Freshmen Academic Athletes of the Year.

To earn the ISCC distinction, students must have earned a 3.0 GPA or higher after completing at least 48 credit hours while participating in one of the college's 12 sports. Moraine Valley recipients are: baseball players Ben Cash (Oak Lawn) and Cole Hermanson (Shepard); basketball players Mary Chronopoulou (Reavis), Aden Edebali (Turkey) and Janiya Hilliard (South Shore); golfer Caden Carr (Marist); soccer players Emma Ahern (Bremen), Gustavo Alvarez (Oak Lawn), Komi Bakou (Andrew), Patrick Canny (Lockport Township), Adam Critchett (Shepard), Aoife Finn (Stagg), Tristan Kelly (Andrew), Jakub Paluch (Reavis) and Giorgos Vallianatos (Sandburg); runners Brandon Armendarez (Reavis), Ryan O'Connor (Lincoln-Way East), David Olmos (Richards) and Natalia Wrobel (Richards); softball players Maggie Evoy (Shepard), Emily Madrigal (Shepard), Emily Manso (Evergreen Park) and Nicole Wagner (Marist); tennis players Erica Chapan (Andrew), Matthew Doyle (Tinley Park), Hannah Markiewicz (Mother McAuley) and Devin Thielmann (Stagg); and volleyball player Ava Porada (Lincoln-Way East).

Porada also was awarded the Dick Durrant Sophomore Academic Athlete of the Year Award for maintaining a 4.0 GPA in the ISCC.

The All-Conference Freshmen Academic Athletes completed at least 24 credit hours with a 3.0 GPA or higher. Moraine Valley recipients are: baseball players Christian Cardenas (Basha), Jack Hoh (Lincoln-Way East), Daniel Komosa (Marist) and Jake Lisk (Sandburg); basketball players Malik Kelly (Evergreen Park) and Aubree Schultz (Lincoln-Way West); golfer Dan Davila (Argo); soccer players Dyani Calderon (Kennedy), Jada Cunningham (Stagg), Mariajose Guzman (Richards), Ytati Roca (Oak Forest) and Matthew Rosier (Lockport Township); softball players Riley Evoy (Shepard), Mya Granados (Evergreen Park) and Cassidy Ostema (Sandburg); tennis players Cate Gerl (Lincoln-Way West), Izabella Slezakova (Stagg) and Henry Witek (Andrew); and volleyball players Kaila Butvilas (Shepard), Brooklyn Condon (Lincoln-Way Central) and Ava Theoharis (Mother McAuley).

"Every year we have a great group of Moraine Valley student-athletes showing up in the classroom and in their sport. They work hard, and it reflects well on the college and community. It's not an easy balance," said Bill Finn, Athletics director. "I also have to give recognition to our Athletics staff, who are always available to help with the success of our student-athletes."
