Q & A with General McArthur III

When student-athletes need to make sure they are on track academically, are eligible to play their sport and have the required courses to transfer to a four-year college or university, they talk to General McArthur III, athletic student success specialist. Get to know General.

What is your educational and athletic background?
I have a Bachelor of Science in Accounting from Xavier University of Louisiana and two master's degrees – Master of Business Administration (finance) and Master of Management (Human Resources) from North Park University (Chicago).

I played up to high school baseball. The college I selected didn't have a team.

I started coaching T-ball in 2002 and have coached every year since, including elite travel, high school, at Moraine Valley and national teams.

I'm an avid fan of many sports.

When did you start working at Moraine Valley?
In 2008, I was hired as an adjunct COL-101 instructor. In 2010, I was hired part-time as the New Student Orientation Coordinator. Then I was full-time as the veteran's coordinator and finally this position in 2015.

What is your primary role with the student-athletes?
My title is athletic student success specialist. My primary role is supporting student-athletes academically through effective use of resources and programs that are designed to help student-athletes with course completion, retention, athletic eligibility, transferability and graduation.

What is your favorite part of the job?
Watching student-athletes complete their degree requirements and graduate from Moraine Valley as better students, people and athletes.

What is your least favorite part of the job?
Student-athletes not successfully completing their degree.

What is some advice you want to emphasize to current students and those moving on?
Stay focused, build routines and set goals. Those three things will not only help them through school and their respective sport but also in life as adults.

What is your favorite sport to watch?
The NFL.

What was your very first job?
Deckhand on a daily tour boat (no longer exists) in Navy Pier, similar to the Spirit of Chicago.

Achievement you are most proud of.
My kids!!! Supporting my son to reluctantly obtain his college degrees. My daughter is just in high school but plans to continue on to college and graduate school.

What is one item on your bucket list?
Parachute out of a plane. I know, right?!

Your life philosophy.
See the glass for what it is…not half-full or half-empty but in the middle while still staying optimistic. Find the opportunities and whatever is good in bad situations.

What actor would play you in a movie?
Ben Affleck from "The Accountant."

Your biggest pet peeve.
TRAINS THAT STOP TRAFFIC!!!!

Who is your hero/idol?
Barack Obama.
