The Cyclone women’s tennis team had a successful fall, going 6-3 overall and 2-2 in the Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference. They finished second by half a point at the NJCAA Region IV tournament, which qualified them for the national tournament that was scheduled to start May 4. First-year Head Coach Bre Vollan had a cohesive, energetic team to work with, including three sophomores who are moving on.
When this Cyclone team ended its season, it was bittersweet. They edged out their opponent for the number two spot at the region tournament, qualifying for nationals, but they witnessed the finale of their tightknit group.
After a long two days (Oct. 11-12) of battling, the Cyclones grabbed a runners-up finish in the NJCAA Region IV tournament, which qualified them for the national tournament.
The score was as close as you can get in tennis, and included four tiebreakers, with the Cyclones on the losing end of their latest matchup. They fell 4-5 to College of Lake County.
The Cyclone women’s tennis team played smarter, including one of the best overall doubles matches this season, to grab a 5-4 victory over Milwaukee Area Technical College.
The Cyclones were able to fit in five matches and a 3-2 victory before rain ended their home opener when they faced a new tennis team out of Bryant & Stratton College.
A mostly new Cyclone squad took the courts for their opening match of the season against a solid Illinois Valley Community College. Despite the 3-6 loss, the challenge set up the team for what’s to come.
