Being on the national stage is never easy, especially for first timers. That didn’t intimidate Brooke Zielke and Jasmine Abunaim, who started their run at the NJCAA Division I Women’s Tennis Championship in Tyler, Texas.
After a long “off season,” Brooke Zielke and Jasmine Abunaim are gearing up to head to the NJCAA Division I Women’s Tennis Championship in Tyler, Texas, May 5 to 10 at Tyler Junior College.
All season long the Cyclones have battled through tough opponents and injury. They put up another good fight with Olivet Nazarene University last night, but came up just short in the 4-5 loss.
Battling into the night and under the lights, the Cyclones fought through some tough matches but came up short against College of Lake County on Oct. 2, losing 3-6. Jasmine Abunaim and Brooke Zielke, however, maintained a perfect record.
Every win the Cyclones bring home lends to more preparation for the upcoming region tournament. Their latest 8-1 victory last night came against College of DuPage.
Every win counts for the short tennis season. The women grabbed another 6-3 victory at home last night against the visiting Elgin Community College Spartans in part thanks to some forfeits.
It all came down to the second doubles. And they delivered. After a long and hot match, the Cyclones battled to a 5-4 victory over McHenry County College at home last night.
The Cyclones finally played their home opener Sept. 18, battling to the bitter end. Even while down a couple players to injury, they fought through a 5-4 loss to Waubonsee Community College.
Facing their first four-year university this fall (Sept. 11) the Cyclones had their hands full. They may have lost the effort 4-3 to North Central JV but came away with more good experience to help them in conference play.
Tiebreakers were the game changers Sept. 8 in the Cyclones' match with Sauk Valley Community College. However, it ended in heartbreak as Moraine Valley fell 3-6 when the dust settled.
Last year’s women’s tennis team missed competing at nationals by half a point. This year, a strong lineup and new head coach aim to guarantee a trip to the Big Dance.
She may be close in age to her players, but incoming Cyclone women’s head tennis Coach Breanna Vollan has the enthusiasm and attitude to lead her squad to success.
