Former Cyclone returns to women’s tennis team as head coach

She may be close in age to her players, but incoming Cyclone women's head tennis Coach Breanna Vollan has the enthusiasm and attitude to lead her squad to success.

Vollan is finishing her senior year at Trinity Christian College, just two years removed from her time competing at Moraine Valley. While running the courts as a Cyclone (2015, 2016), she maintained a perfect record at sixth singles her freshman year for an NJCAA All-Region championship and All-Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference team honors. She helped her 2015 team to a runners-up finish in regionals, qualifying them for the national tournament.

"I am so excited to be taking over the program. My time playing at Moraine Valley was one of the best experiences I have ever had, so I'm happy to return to the college in this new role," she said. "I hope to bring energy and a positive 'get things done' attitude. I think because of my age I'm able to relate and communicate with players in a different way, which hopefully will make the program full of open communication and passion."

In her sophomore year of college, Vollan began coaching at her alma mater, Chicago Christian High School, where she played four years of tennis. Although she's going to school to major in psychology with a minor in pre-law, she's taking classes part-time in the next year to dedicate time to the Cyclones. She aspires to become an estate planning lawyer and a special needs advocate but plans to stay involved in tennis.

Using her own experiences as a base, Vollan is acutely aware of both the mental and physical aspects of the sport. She will focus on the needs of her players such as form, speed and strength, but take into account they are not machines.

"Hard work is imperative to a successful season. I hope to contribute to the program in a way that highlights the importance of character, mental strength and confidence building so my players can get the same great experience I had playing for Moraine Valley," she explained.

Being close in age to her team is a bonus as she can communicate more effectively. What she may lack in experience she makes up for in hard work and being unafraid to ask questions. Vollan wants to create an open and positive atmosphere where players can flourish individually and as a team. All-in-all, she's pumped for the season to begin.

"We have a full schedule and the opportunity to play against some four-year institutions as well. There will be an adjustment period, but I'm sure the season will be a great experience for the team and myself," Vollan said. "I'm looking forward to seeing the growth of the players. It's my job to help them get to where they want and need to be in all aspects of the game. That's my favorite part of being a coach, being there for breakthroughs."
