Cyclones take second; qualify for nationals

Forced to play indoors due to the weather, the Cyclones captured second place in the NJCAA Region 4 Tournament, qualifying them for nationals.

All season, the Cyclones have played solid tennis, losing only one match to the ultimate region champs, McHenry County College. Allyson English was champion at No. 3 singles, and doubles pairs Izzy Slezakova/Victoria Maratea at No. 1 and Maya Morris/English at No. 2 were champs. Morris took second at No. 4, Maratea finished in third place at No. 2 and Erica Chapan ended in fourth at No. 6.

"I'm extremely proud of this team. We had a lot of new players come in and put in the work that translated to some first place finishes," said Head Coach Matt Marusarz. "Maya Morris played exceptionally well against her rival at McHenry County. She played with great poise and mental toughness. Allyson showed how strong she is as a player, finishing off her singles season completely undefeated! She came back in a huge win against Sauk Valley's No. 3 singles player and cemented herself as the next face of Moraine Valley tennis.

"I also wanted to mention our graduating sophomores. Izzy and Vica fought hard in regionals and played an amazing championships match. They were down a set and came back to win in the super tie breaker in a whopping 10-1 victory. Erica also showed how much she improved and how hard she fights even when she's down," Marusarz explained. "I'm very proud and excited to see where life takes these sophomores."

The Cyclones have all winter to prepare for the NJCAA Division I Women's Tennis Championship, May 4-6, in Tyler, Texas.
