Big offense in split with Trojans

Triton College is a tough team, but the Cyclones put up two good battles, splitting the doubleheader.

GAME 1
Both teams came out of the gate swinging, literally, to score all their runs. That was all the Cyclones needed for the 6-2 victory.

Moraine Valley had seven hits to the Trojans' nine, but was able to capitalize on their base runners. The Trojans started off with a few good hits to score two right away, but when the Cyclones came up to bat in the bottom of the first, they doubled the score. The first batter, Megan McClelland (1-for-4), hit a double on the second pitch. Emma Hansen (1-for-3) was walked on four straight balls before Jolene Anderson (2-for-4, RBI) knocked in one run on a single to center field. When Brialynn Mica (1-for-3) came up to bat, Anderson stole second and Hansen scored on the throw. Mica bunted to get on. Marissa Walsh was next at the plate and was hit by a pitch after two balls. With the bases loaded and two outs, Cassidy Ostema (1-for-3, 2 RBIs) singled a pop fly to center field that scored two runs, making it 4-2 by the end of the inning.

In the second inning, the Cyclones scored two more. After Hansen and Mya Granados (1-for-3) each singled, they each stole third and second, respectively, but Hansen then scored on a throwing error. Granados advanced on the same error before scoring on a wild pitch. After that, the defense and pitching for both teams tightened up. Ostema struck out four this game with no walks.

GAME 2
The second game saw more activity at the plate, with most runs being scored again in the earlier innings. This time, however, the Cyclones narrowly lost the effort 7-6.

Triton scored in the first inning once again but were countered by the Cyclones in their first at-bat. When Moraine Valley came to the plate, they loaded the bases with a single from McClelland (3-for-4, 3B) and walks by Hansen (1-for-3) and Anderson. Mica (1-for-4, RBI) and Walsh (3-for-3, RBI) came up with consecutive singles to score two runs. With two outs, Stephanie Lohman (1-for-3, 3 RBIs) knocked in two more runs with a single to centerfield but was caught running to second to end the inning with her team up 4-3.

The Trojans retook the lead in their next at-bat on a string of singles, but the Cyclones answered to tie it up 5-5. McClelland ripped a triple to right field and scored on a single from Hansen.

Moraine Valley gained a one-run advantage in the bottom of the third after Walsh singled and Ruby Amigon doubled to get on. Lohman grounded out but was able to score Walsh. The Trojans scored two more runs the next inning to get ahead while the Cyclones struggled to capitalize on singles or they hit into plays.
