Breaking out the broom

Breaking out the broom

The weather was ideal, the bats were on fire and the Cyclones earned their first sweep of the year in their home opener with South Suburban College. It's been over a year since the Cyclones played a home game.

In the first game, Moraine Valley only needed the first inning to solidify their dominance after securing eight runs. Danielle Travis (triple), Abbie Wantroba, Alexandria Palumbo and Kara Riordan earned RBIs that inning, the latter two grabbing two in their at-bat. Although the Bulldogs tacked on three runs, the Cyclones continued their offensive prowess, adding three more runs in the sixth inning with another RBI from Wantroba and a two-run double from Emily Gorski, who happened to earn the win on the mound. She struck out seven in the Cyclones' 11-3 victory.

The Bulldogs weren't pushed around so easily in the nightcap. The Cyclones got on the board in the first inning again after a two-run double from Wantroba, but the Bulldogs countered with two in the third. Moraine Valley took back the lead after Brianna Dvorak scored from third on a passed ball. Some big hits from South Suburban added two more runs in the fourth. Kara Riordan stopped additional scoring from the Bulldogs with her diving grab at shortstop with no outs and two on for a double play. Moraine Valley knotted the score in the bottom of the fourth when Travis knocked one off the left field fence for a solo homerun. Tied at four going into the bottom of the sixth, Palumbo drove in the go-ahead run on a single, and Claire Minnich added insurance with a two-run single. That was all the Cyclones needed as Gorski pitched the Bulldogs into playable outs in the seventh for the 7-4 win and sweep.
