The Cyclones graduated nearly their entire 2022 squad that won a conference championship and competed at nationals. With one returner and new incoming talent, they're aiming for smaller victories.
Last season, the Cyclones were nationally ranked as high as 11th, were Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference champions for the third consecutive year, runners-up in the NJCAA Region 4 race and had four All-Region and All-Conference runners. Comprised of mainly sophomores, all but one transferred.
Jack Kajmowicz (Lockport) is the lone returner. He was one of the top four runners last season, earning All-Region and All-Conference honors before competing at nationals as a freshman. He has stepped up as a leader this season and is ready to guide his new teammates.
"We have high expectations for Jack. Last year, he was injured coming in and still did well. Now he's healthy, and we're hoping it translates to fast times," said Head Coach Dimitri Dimizas, in his eighth season leading the program. "From day one, his attitude, work ethic and communication with the team have been great to see."
Dimizas and his second-year assistant coach and running Cyclone alumnus, David Alvarez, recruited some talent to join Kajmowicz.
Andrew Sima (Shepard) is following in the footsteps of his brother, Jackson, who successfully ran for the Cyclones in the 2020 and 2021 seasons. He has been working hard over the summer to prepare for his college debut. Joel Vargas-Cortes (Argo) is the fastest incoming freshman with track experience. Noah Rigoni-Kreczmer (Stagg) is a tough runner from a solid high school running program. Demario Angarita (Nazareth Academy) has a resolute determination, good work ethic and positive attitude. He was a football running back in high school and has the tough mentality to compete. Robert Slezak (Oak Lawn) has been working hard this summer and is aiming to step up his running game. Nate Diaz (Oak Lawn) has been nursing an injury but is still preparing to compete this season.
So many new faces lead to some unknowns but plenty of promise this season. "We're not focusing so much on any championships. The goal is for them to improve as much as possible and gain experience," Dimizas said. "We want Jack to get as fast as possible and individuals to qualify for nationals, as we usually do."
The Cyclones open their season on Friday, Sept. 1, at the Saints Twilight Invite in Channahon, Illinois.
