Third place finish in first meet of season

The Cyclones finished ahead of runners in their conference and region for third place at the Heartland Community College Meet. It was a strong showing for the mostly freshmen team.

For most of the Cyclones, this was the first 8K race they've run. Jackson Sima led the pack in 13th place in 28:45. Sophomore Carlos Galvan followed close behind in 15th, 28:56. Freshmen Nick Tsiones (25th, 30:02), Juan Ramos (26th, 30:07) and Sebastian Szuba (30th, 30:44) rounded out the scoring. Jimmy Duffy (31:10) and Adael Jaimes-Sotelo (33:12) ran in what turned out to be a canceled open race.

"I was pleased with how they performed. I was not expecting a third place finish, but I'm happy for the guys. It was the first ever 8K for almost all of them. There's a learning curve coming from running shorter distances in high school, so they'll improve with experience," said Head Coach Dimitri Dimizas. "[Assistant Coach] Aaron and I were running around to see them at different spots on the course, and it was nice to see them paired together. We need to work on closing the gaps between teammates, but we have a few weeks until the next meet, and I know they'll be ready to get back to work. Due to my mistake of missing the announcement for the cancellation of the open race, Jimmy and AJ had to run their 8K alone at the end of the meet. It was not easy for them but they volunteered to do it, which I greatly respect."
