Freshmen hold their own in opening race

Running all freshmen, the Cyclones placed a solid sixth out of 12 at the Earlybird Invitational in Elmhurst.

This was the first college race for every Cyclone on the course. They battled through the nerves and came ahead of two other community colleges and a few four-year colleges and universities in the field. Suhayb Froukh (43rd, 21:06) led the way followed by Carlos Galvan (57th, 21:42), Grant Wright (61st, 21:49), Matt Pierce (73rd, 22:45), Nick Marfoe (90th, 23:43) and Chris Santoyo (101st, 24:40).

"I think they handled themselves well. Going through the first mile we had a nice pack, but no race is ever won in the first mile. The guys separated from each other halfway through the race, so that's something we really need to work on. We finished as the top region school, but we will need a tighter pack if we want to have any success at the end of October," said Head Coach Dimitri Dimizas. "Everyone still has things to work on, but we'll get there. This was a promising start."
