Cyclones battle through 2 OT with Panthers

It took two overtimes and a penalty shot before the Cyclones could go down against the nationally ranked Morton College Panthers at home.

Normally when these two teams meet, the intensity ratchets up, and the excitement didn't disappoint. Coming into this game, the Cyclones were 2-1 overall, having just lost a tough game while the Panthers, No. 10 in the country, were on a two-game losing streak. As soon as the game started, it simulated a tennis match with the ball changing possession often. The Panthers had a number of close shots and free kicks that went wide of the net. Meanwhile, the Cyclones kept putting on pressure to prevent any scoring while Fernando Barragan and Colin Kroll made several attempts to put the ball in the net. But by halftime, neither team had scored.

As time in the second half dwindled, both teams were pushing harder to score. Around 33 minutes, Barragan came close, but the ball was pushed up and over by the keeper. With less than 10 minutes, the Panthers scored first as Cyclone keeper Andruw Martinez dove right of the ball. With enough time left in the game, the Cyclones put on more pressure and a lucky corner kick scramble in front of the net saw Kroll slip one past the keeper.

The 1-1 tie led to one 10-minute overtime where Martinez made another big save and ended with the need for a second overtime. With another scramble in front of the Cyclones' net, Moraine Valley was called on a handball, giving the Panthers a penalty kick. As Martinez slid to the right, Morton skated the ball to the left for the 2-1 win.

"This was a great game against a very good team with few weaknesses. I'm proud of our guys. It's a very tough way to lose and decide the game, but we need to avoid those situations before we get into them," said Head Coach Chris Koloffon. "We're still a young team, eight first-year starters, but we are getting better."
