Cyclones finish first half of season

The Cyclones finished the first half of their season on Oct. 4, grabbing third place overall in the Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference.

In a change by the NJCAA, the Region IV tournament was moved from October to late April to better align with nationals in May. However, it split the golf season into two halves. Moraine Valley had one invitational and six conference matches this fall and now have to train all winter.

"The good part is more golf," said Head Coach Matt Lovelace. "We're all going to be working hard over the winter and work on our mental game."

The Cyclones have a talented squad, but there were a few moments this fall where the excitement of the moment caused a swing that was too fast or a player reflected too much on a shot, according to Lovelace. Otherwise, they played well and as a team had some solid shooting on the course. In their final conference match this fall at ThunderHawk Golf Club, a notoriously tough course, the sophomores played better on those links than they did last year, which is progress, Lovelace noted.

The competition was more intense this season, as three Cyclones narrowly missed All-Conference honors. Sophomore Ben King missed it by 1.8 strokes, freshman Kyle Kuchel was 2 strokes away and sophomore Dan Davila was 2.4 strokes shy.

"We had a great team this fall, they worked well together. We can always do better in golf, and now we're looking forward to the spring," Lovelace said.

The Cyclones will next compete at the NJCAA Region IV Preview on April 19 before regionals April 28 to 30. There may be additional matches hosted by a couple of conference colleges in the spring prior to the tournament.
