Strong roster looking to improve all season

Golf is one of the few lucky college sports to commence this fall, and the Cyclones are playing every ounce of the game while making positive strides each time.

With so many unknowns in athletics during the COVID-19 pandemic, it may all come down to survival of the fittest, but the Cyclones are hoping they just get to play some good golf.

"I'm not sure how full other teams are looking. You never know what to expect. We have a nice full roster with guys who were good golfers in high school," said Head Coach Matt Lovelace, who embarks on his fifth season at the helm.

This season will play out a little differently due to the pandemic. The Cyclones have fewer days they can practice; must always wear masks except when golfing; cannot travel out of state for competition; and must complete forms and have temperatures taken before all practices and competitions. They often compete in matches with and hosted by four-year colleges and universities, but those have all been canceled. Instead, they have only Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference matches before two regional events.

The Cyclones weren't allowed to practice together until Sept. 5, four days before their first competition on a challenging course. However, Lovelace has consistent goals in place.

"As always, in conference, I want us to ease our way in and not get far behind. I want us to win week by week and win regionals," he said. "We need to get better each week and win conference. We'll see what happens."

Three sophomores return this fall: Marty Bennett (Evergreen Park), Patrick Clifton (Sandburg) and Paul Douglas (Peotone). The newcomers include Connor Finn (Lincoln-Way West), Jack McDonald (Reavis) and Randy Miller (Stagg).

The Cyclones' season opener is Sept. 9 on Morton College's new home course — Ruffled Feathers Golf Club in Lemont.
