Cyclones drop two in season opener

Cyclones drop two in season opener

In their home and season opener, the Cyclones dropped two to the visiting Black Hawk College Braves.

Aside from one rough inning in the first game, the Cyclones were right in step with the Braves. It was solid hitting from Black Hawk in the third inning that extended the score to 10-0. Moraine Valley earned three runs in the fourth inning starting with a Jack Hoh (2-for-4) homerun to left field. Ethan Lopez (2-for-4) singled, and then Austin Zernia got on base with two outs. Arnoldo Velazquez grounded into a fielder's choice which scored one. Christian Cardenas then doubled in another run. For the next few innings, the Cyclones forced the Braves to ground and pop out, holding them to 11 runs. However, they scored two more runs in the seventh from well-placed hits and a couple of Cyclones' errors. Hoh scored the final run for the Cyclones in the bottom of the seventh with a double after Niko Mastoras (2-for-4) doubled, but that was the last of Moraine Valley's offense in the 14-4 loss.

In the second game, the Cyclones kept the score close until another rough inning that broke the score open. Moraine Valley took a 2-1 lead after the first inning when Dimitri Spatharakis (2-for-3) doubled in two runs (Hoh and Jaylun Camper). The Braves tied the score in the third inning and took a narrow lead in the fifth. It was the eight runs in the sixth inning that hurt the Cyclones. They were able to put one more run on the board in the bottom of that inning after Emmet Barry (1-for-2) lined drive Spatharakis across the plate. The Cyclones lost 12-3.
