Region champs; headed to the Big Dance

It's been seven years since the Cyclones last won an NJCAA Region IV championship, and they earned it in dominating fashion and punched their ticket to nationals.

The Cyclones took first place by 5.5 points over Sauk Valley Community College and 11 points ahead of third place McHenry County College with players earning championships in four singles and two doubles positions.

The first day was too cold and rainy to play outdoors, so they competed in the Homewood-Flossmoor Racquet and Fitness Club. After the first day, Izzy Slezakova at No. 1 singles and Cate Gerl at No. 5 each finished in third place. At No. 2 singles, Simona Tomczak battled through a three-set tiebreaker (3-6, 6-4, 10-3) to become champion as did Hannah Markiewicz at No. 3 (6-7, 6-2, 10-7). Aubree Schultz at No. 4 (6-2, 6-0) and Reagan Cameron at No. 6 in her first season playing tennis (6-0, 6-0) also were champions.

The second day was back on the Cyclone courts and featured all doubles action. Cyclones No. 2 pair Schultz/Gerl won a quick two sets for the championship (6-1, 6-1). The No. 3 pair Tomczak/Erica Chapan sealed the crown after battling through a three-set tiebreaker (6-7, 6-4, 10-6).

With this latest crown, Head Coach Matt Marusarz is the Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference AND Region IV Coach of the Year.

"It's an unreal feeling. Coaching college was already a big step for me and my coaching milestones, but winning a regional title is another level," Marusarz said. "I am very proud and grateful for this team. I also need to give huge credit to Assistant Coach Dave [Souza]. I won Coach of the Year, but I wish it could be attributed to him as well. He's been a huge help and asset to Moraine Valley and the team."

The Cyclones have several months to prepare for the NJCAA Division I Women's Tennis Championship in Tyler, Texas in the beginning of May.

"In the coming months will be a lot of prep work. Getting our team in the weight room, finding courts, etc. But for now, letting them enjoy the championship is priority No. 1," Marusarz said.
