2020-21 Sophomore Send-off: Men’s tennis

The men's tennis team was forced to take a year off last spring due to the COVID-19 pandemic, shortening the amount of playing time for two sophomores and extending it for another this season. The Cyclones bid farewell to three teammates.

David Souza was this year's team captain. He was the lone returning member of the 2019 team that competed at nationals. He did not play for Moraine Valley his first year but joined in 2019 and used his extended COVID-19 eligibility to compete in 2021. He competed at No. 3 singles and No. 1 doubles. Souza is completing his certificate in respiratory therapy at Moraine Valley and may coach tennis in the future.

Edwin Esparza Hernandez was recruited to play in the 2020 season that never happened. He returned in 2021 and took third place at No. 6 singles at the NJCAA Region IV tournament, the highest finish of any individual Moraine Valley player. He will continue his education at the University of Illinois.

Jakub Zolnik also was recruited for the 2020 team. This season, he played No. 5 singles and No. 3 doubles, the latter of which earned him a third place overall finish at regionals. He is still choosing a four-year university to transfer to.
