Short and sweet season, Cyclones happy to compete with all players contributing

The Cyclones were excited to get back on the court and contribute collectively after not having a spring season in 2020 due to the pandemic.

The Cyclones were able to play a short season with eight matches and a final NJCAA Region IV Tournament they hosted. They finished with a 5-3 overall record, going 2-2 in the Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference and taking sixth at regionals. No. 6 singles player, Edwin Esparza Hernandez (Eisenhower), and No. 3 doubles team Jakub Zolnik (Shepard) and Lucas Skowyra (Stagg) all finished third overall in the region.

At the start of the season, Head Coach Mike Maratea wanted all seven of his players to contribute to the team's success. And despite some injured moments and close matches (narrow 5-4 wins over Waubonsee Community College and McHenry County College), they did just that.

David Souza (Eisenhower) was the lone returner from the Cyclones' national team in 2019. The other six, some of whom were set to play in spring 2020, were finally able to play their first complete season. Ali Amer (Reavis), James Coan (Reavis) and Yianni Livieratos (Sandburg) were the remaining players who contributed.

"My opening remarks to the guys: Number one goal is to complete the season with a full team, with everyone contributing to whatever success we can achieve. It was a great group of guys and a great bonding under the leadership of David, who was captain. They did well during a pandemic with a complete team of seven. Only four of the 10 teams at the region tournament could say that," Maratea said, after leading the program in his first season. "This group got along really well, and that made the experience well worth it."
