Cyclones see finale at regionals

The Cyclones' season culminated after the two-day NJCAA Region IV Golf Championship at PrairieView Golf Club in Byron, IL, where they finished in eighth place.

In order to maintain safety protocols, the tournament was shortened from three to two days, cramming in a lot of golf. Unlike years past, the weather was perfect and warm, leading to a firm and fast course with some high scores. Only the top two finishing colleges advance to nationals. Bryant & Stratton College and Illinois Valley Community College took first and second, respectively.

The first day saw the Cyclones run their typical scores. Marty Bennett led with 81 followed by Randy Miller (86), Paul Douglas (88), Connor Finn (90) and Jack McDonald (91). At that point under normal circumstances, the Cyclones would have headed to the hotel to regroup for the next day of golf. Instead, they had to play another nine, ending the second round early the following morning.

Through two rounds, Bennett was on track to qualify for the national tournament, all he needed was a solid third round. Instead, the wind started blowing, and the course got tougher. Bennett fought and scrambled as hard as he could but ended up with another 85 just short of a national qualifying score.

Once again, the Cyclones played well as Bennett (81, 85, 85) led his team one last time followed by Douglas (88, 91, 84), Miller (86, 87, 80), Finn (90, 90, 97) and McDonald (91, 103, 89).
