Opening day feels like spring

Opening day feels like spring

Who would've thought Cyclone baseball would play their first game outside on March 1. However, they did, on what felt like a spring day, splitting two with Joliet Junior College.

Enjoying the elements outdoors, Moraine Valley was edged out 6-5 in the first game after an attempted comeback. The Wolves put five on the board early until the Cyclones scored in the third through fifth innings thanks to RBIs from Steve Insley, Patrick Hayes (double), Alex Martinez and Josh McArthur. On the mound, Brendan Gill took the loss, allowing two hits, five runs and striking out two.

It was all Cyclones in the second game as they won 7-2. With Niles Gall (2-for-3) on base in the first, Chris Villafuerte bunted and reached first on a fielding error, which also scored the first run. McArthur and Alex Martinez (sac fly) knocked in two more runs that same inning. Hayes (1-for-3) and Ryan Grand (1-for-2) each earned an RBI in the second and fifth inning, respectively. Brett Renken led the Cyclones on the hill, allowing just one run on two hits and striking out two.
