Two Cyclones maintain perfection in loss to Lancers

Battling into the night and under the lights, the Cyclones fought through some tough matches but came up short against the College of Lake County Lancers last night, losing 3-6.

The Cyclones earned wins at second and fifth singles as well as first doubles. Jasmine Abunaim (No. 2) took care of business again (6-0, 6-3) with her calm, cool and level-headed approach to maintain her undefeated streak. Mary Stocklen (No. 5) secured a much needed win (6-1, 6-3). Nearly every game went to deuce with one game having 20 deuce points. "She did an amazing job being mentally in it and patient against a very even opponent. She fought incredibly hard," said head Coach Breanna Vollan.

Abunaim and Brooke Zielke secured a win at doubles playing one of their best matches this season (6-4, 5-7, 10-6) to hold onto an unblemished record. "The match was always neck-and-neck and really could have been anyone's. But my athletes came together and played as a team. Obviously, their physical game was great, but I was most impressed with their mental game and how they picked each other up. This match was definitely one of the highlights of this season so far," Vollan said.

Zielke (1st singles) lost her first match of the season against a talented opponent. Although the final score was 2-6, 2-6, it was a lot closer than it seemed. "There were a countless number of long, hard points. Brooke stepped up her game, but was simply edged out by a better player," Vollan said. "She took the loss like a champ though and went into doubles ready to fight."

Serene Itani lost a hard match at third singles (2-6, 3-6). Audrey Stocklen also lost at fourth singles (0-6, 0-6) against a solid player. Again, this score did not express how well she played. Coming back from injury, Summar Hasan was able to play for the first time in a few weeks. She lost 0-6, 0-6 but had some good shots in the effort. Audrey Stocklen and Itani fell at second doubles (5-7, 0-6) while Hasan and Mary Stocklen lost at third doubles (0-6, 2-6).
